Scientific Activity

The scientific and applied research conducted by the laboratories within the Division of Functional Materials and Nanostructures is aligned with leading innovation programs and the development of new technologies that ensure sustainable development and enhance the competitiveness of both the Bulgarian and European economies.

The research is focused on acquiring new knowledge about the fundamental properties of materials and their application in the development of micro-, nano-, opto-, and acoustoelectronic devices for biomedical, dental, and sensor applications.

The scientific activity is carried out in the context of active international collaboration, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and the accelerated implementation of new technologies.

Research Areas

  • Physics and technology of complex crystals
  • Thin dielectric and conductive layers and their heterostructures
  • Study of optical, structural, dielectric, electrical, and magnetic properties
  • Carbon black-based nanostructures with applications in cryobiology and reproductive medicine

Applications

The developments in these areas address key national priorities and international programs of the European Community, such as:

  • Nanoelectronics
  • Telecommunications
  • Information technologies and society
