Since its establishment in 1972, the Institute of Solid State Physics (ISSP) has pursued a consistent policy in support of Bulgarian industry, laying the foundations of microelectronics and solar energy technologies in the country. The Institute has played a leading role in key fields such as condensed matter physics and laser physics, solid-state theory and phase transitions, superconductivity and low-temperature physics, the physics of liquid crystals and living matter, atomic and plasma physics, the study of the structural properties of crystals and amorphous materials, as well as acousto- and nanoelectronics.
Today, ISSP is successfully integrated into the European Research Area. Through its advanced and interdisciplinary research, the Institute strives to foster innovation that contributes to addressing global societal challenges in energy, healthcare, and the environment.
The year 2024 has been another milestone in ISSP’s scientific journey, building upon more than 50 years of research excellence while exploring new frontiers in science.
As a research center with strong traditions, ISSP continues to increase its scientific output and strengthen Bulgaria’s international scientific presence. The institute plays a key role in integrating Bulgarian research into the European Research Area (ERA), ensuring global recognition for Bulgarian science.
Our research projects align with national and European research strategies, focusing on:
The Institute has a proven track record of successfully training young scientists from Bulgaria and around the world.
Today, as members of the European Research Area, we contribute to shaping the future of our country by facilitating the transition to a knowledge-based economy in the context of globalization and technological convergence.
