Short description

The object of the project proposal is a phospholipid bionanocomposite, as a model of a cellular biomembrane. There is still no unambiguously accepted and used model for the analysis of this selective biostructure providing transport of substances. We assume the arrangement of lipids, considered as monomers, analogous to liquid crystal molecules, in a bilayer, which allows us to assume the bilayer membrane structure as planar, adaptable to the surfaces of glass cells in which the studied biomaterials are placed.

Short description

The "m-DAC4" project is aimed at the development of an innovative hybrid technology for capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. The main issue that the project concerns is the growing need for efficient and sustainable methods of capturing CO2 in the context of global climate change and the increase of anthropogenic carbon emissions. Specifically, the focus is on developing technologies that can regulate atmospheric CO2 levels regardless of its origin. The project's scientific hypotheses focus on the potential of combining two CO2 capture technologies: (1) specialized membranes (both biological and synthetic) and (2) direct capture from air (DAC) - to create a more efficient system.

The PhD research will be guided by the following hypothesis: laser irradiation of enzymatic and cellular systems changes the energy levels of protein molecules, leading to conformational and structural changes in the active and/or regulatory centers and accelerates enzyme-mediated processes, including photosynthesis. This hypothesis tests the possibility of increasing the efficiency of CO2 capture through targeted modification of biological structures using a femtosecond laser.

Project objectives: The doctoral study aims to investigate the influence of the shape, composition, and structure of microplastics (50 micrometers – 5 mm) made of PE, PP, and PET on absorption in the visible and near-UV spectrum in an aquatic environment. Modeling and computer simulations of the interaction processes between coherent (laser) emission in the visible and UV spectrum and the particles will be performed. Experimental verification of the developed models is also planned.
